The turning - map and pin

The Turning comes to Bristol

While some of you will have been at an initial meeting at City Road Baptist Church on the 25th January, others will not have heard of The Turning and plans for training and events in Bristol in April 2017. It’s best explained in this letter from Lynn Green, General Secretary of Baptists Together, and WEBA’s Regional Team Leader Nigel Coles.

First, here is a video of three of the Bristol organisers – WEBA’s Gary Woodall, Eric Aidoo (minister of City Road Baptist Church and Chair of Churches Together in Greater Bristol) and Jackie Davis (chair of Bristol Evangelical Alliance) talking about the plans earlier this year:

“The Turning” – Bristol, April 2016

Hi,

You will be aware that a year ago Lynn Green called Baptists Together to pray because she sensed that the Lord was saying to us He was doing a new thing. This became known as “Beacons of Prayer” and encouraged individuals and churches to seek the Lord and make space for Him to speak and move amongst us; laying down our own agenda’s and opening ourselves to God. You can read more about this and see all the blog posts if you visit our Baptist Together website and search for Beacons of Prayer.

A year later one of our Union churches, The Gate in Reading, organised two weeks of street evangelism and very quickly it became apparent that the Lord was doing something that we had not seen for many years. People were very open and willing to be prayed for on the streets and large numbers were praying to receive Him or recommit their lives to Him. The mission was extended and in the end over 2,000 people responded and gave their contact details so that they could be followed up! Yinka Oyekan and the team at Reading came to call this “The Turning”. Yinka came to share what God was doing with our Baptist Steering Group in June 2016 and we were able to pray for this and other mission initiatives in our Association.

Soon other cities were interested, and Yinka and the team have recently visited Liverpool where 70 churches have worked together in street evangelism and see over 650 people respond to Jesus in 2 weeks. Again, you can read more about this and watch video clips through our website and social media.

Well, now “The Turning” is coming to Bristol from the 16th – 23rd April 2017 and so we wanted to encourage you and your church to get involved in whatever way you can. We are aware that for some of you, this is what you have been waiting and praying for! Others, though, will not find it so easy to connect with the style of spirituality / mission that The Turning offers. What we wanted say is that we know Yinka and the team and know that they are deeply Christ-like people who demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit. Also we have observed that this is a move of God birthed out of a real commitment to prayer, both within The Gate and across the churches in Reading. Furthermore, it demonstrates city-wide unity as churches witness and serve together. All these things reflect God’s heart.

So can we encourage you to get involved? There are all sorts of ways that you can do that… by getting involved in praying, through getting involved in street evangelism, and by getting involved in following up with people who respond. This is a real opportunity for individuals and churches to grow in evangelism and discipleship.

Last year we sensed God saying to us from Isaiah 43:18&19 that he was doing a new thing and now it seems that He is moving among us. Our prayer is that our Baptist churches will be in step with the Holy Spirit and faithful in being Beacons of Hope in Bristol in these uncertain times.

Every blessing,

Lynn Green & Nigel Coles
